As a result of digging through public and private archives for 38 years, we are able to create this accurate history of the very rare variants from the Pz.Kpfw.II family - the VK 901, VK 903, VK 1301, VK 1303, and VK 1601. Original drawings, documented measurements, and original wartime photographs were used to create four-view drawings of the VK 901 and VK 1601 (printed at 1/35th scale). Over a thousand hours were spent precisely measuring external details of the "Luchs" in order to create as-built drawings of all six views (including right side and belly) with both the VK 1301 and VK 1303 turrets in 1/24th scale. Even the smallest details are clearly discernable in the component drawings at 1/10th scale including the surprise feature of an Orterkompass mounted on the turret roof. This 56 page book is illustrated with over 50 drawings and 41 clean/rare photos.

38 years of digging out original records in public and private archives and hundreds of visits to museums were spent in creating this penultimate history of a winner - the Panzerkampfwagen III variants used to win the 1939 to 1941 campaigns. Survivors were accurately measured in detail and drawn at full scale to create as-built drawings for the first time - accurate to the same tight tolerances demanded of the original assembly firms. Thousands of hours went into sorting out the defining features for each Ausfuehrung as well as when significant modifications were introduced. We have selected the unique approach of using 1/10th scale drawings to illustrate the smallest details, while six-view (including right side and belly) 1/35th scale drawings are still used for the complete Pz.Kpfw.III. Over 120 clean/rare photos and drawings illustrate this 84 page book.

Panzer Tracts No. 6-3 - Schwere-Panzerkampfwagen Maus and E 100 development and production from 1942 to 1945

Thanks to the School of Tank Technology, Krupp s correspondence and meeting notes survived to provide us with a detailed insider view of the development of the Maus and the associated TIger-Maus (later renamed E 100) projects. Since the rigid procurement system had broken down, anyone attending the next project meeting could add novel ideas as requirements such as remotely controlled flamethrowers and a 2 cm anti-aircraft gun in the turret. Thanks to a private collector, the detailed large-scale component drawings created by Porsche and Krupp for the Maus survived and were used to create the new scale drawings of the Maus. Pure chance also preserved the drawings, notes, and photographs that made it possible for us to create new drawings of the E 100 with a turret designed by Krupp in 1944. In accordance with our high standards, the text and data are based solely on primary sources. 62 clean/rare photos and 67 scale drawings illustrate this 72 page book.

Now for the first time, we have compiled an accurate record of the features of each Pz.kpfw.38(t) Ausfuehrung. The correct pieces of the puzzle were found through a lot of hard work, research trips to measure and study the survivors, close attention to detail, and help from friends. Over one thousand hours were spent carefully measuring and drawing all the details of surviving Pz.Kpfw.38(t) chassis and turrets to create accurate four-view drawings of the Ausf.B, C, D, E, F, and S and six-view drawings of the Ausf.A and G. Extra efforts were also expended to draw details on the chassis and belly. As is our high standard, Panzer Tracts are based solely on the content of primary source documents. The real value of the Pz.Kpfw.38(t) can be learned by reading the experience reports written by unit commanders close to the time when the actions occurred. Having contacted veterans from practically every Beute-Panzer unit, Werner Regenberg has compiled a massive archive of original documents and photographs directly linked to each unit. This vehicle served the German army in either North Africa or the Middle East during WWII. At war's end the Syrians snatched up the salvageable Panzer Mk IVs and whatever parts they could scrounge and continued using them into the 60s. This example was captured by the Israelis during the 6 day war. Not only were they used as mobile tanks, but when hulls or drivetrains were damaged beyond repair the turrets with their excellent guns and optics were removed and placed in static anti tank positions. These were very difficult to see and the Israelis made sure to round up as many as they could at the end of the conflict. The AAF Tank Museum traded one of their vehicles to the Israelis for this Panzer Mk IV. Unfortunately the info card did not list what vehicle it was and the staff members I spoke with did not either. It's in remarkable shape and doesn't appear to have been restored since it's capture.

George wrote me with some more details on the history of the Panzer Mk IV:

As far as the Mark IV goes, here's how I remember its story.

It was captured at the end of W.W.II. Supposedly it was at a factory and was never used in battle. I believe that even though Germany was building the biggies like the Panther, Tiger and King Tiger, they never stopped production if the Mark IV. anyway, my history on Axis production is rust but the story goes that the tank was captured by the Russians, brand new, sitting in the factory yard. It is not a combat veteran.

The Russians put these tanks in I believe Hungary where it was part of that army for some time. Apparently at some point the Russians either gave or sold a bunch of these Mark IVs to Syria . Syria used these tanks as Pillboxes and would fire them into Israel . During the 6 Day War, Israel captured a handful of these tanks and brought them back into their borders. A handful of these tanks then sat in a bone yard for a couple of decades.

The museum owner heard these stories and discovered that Israel really did have a few of these Mark IVs. At the time he contacted a dealer over there, the Israeli Government was in the process of building a museum that celebrated the history of Israeli armor. They were looking for examples of tanks that had been used during the course of their history. The owner asked if they were interested in swapping a Stuart for a Panzer IV. They agreed. The Stuart they took had an exterior restoration. I believe it was complete but was not running. Unfortunately, I never took a look inside and one day it was just gone. They were in the mists of swapping for 2nd Panzer IV when the Israeli's realized that they could get much more for these tanks than they agreed to with the first trade so the deal for the 2nd Mark IV fell apart.

While it never saw any action during the 2nd World War, I think it did manage a pretty colorful history for itself.

I've been inside it. It's not pristine but at the same token, it's in much better shape than many of the more modern examples at the museum. It had leaked a little fluid here and there so it's quite possible that it could be restored to running someday.

Revell Panzer IV ausf H Flakpanzer 88 conversion

I chose this vehicle as my first scratchbuild attempt. It looked relatively easy to do, it looked cheap(ish), and the tank, let’s face it, looks crazy. The Germans seemed to have a philosophy of “if we can stick an 88 on top of it, we’ll stick an 88 on top of it”, and they did. They put 88s on everything they could think of: trucks and halftracks mostly, but among others, on top of a PnzIV chassis as well. (The only reason they did not stick an 88 on top of another 88 is that it would have looked stupid even for them.) The vehicle looks wicked, but it’s easy to see this tank topple, should the gun fire in any other direction than straight forward or backward… It certainly does not seem like the most stable contraption. Perhaps this was one of the reasons they did not build more of this. The other reason was most likely the stress the gun put onto the suspension after all, it was a heavy gun, and the recoil also was quite severe. (Don’t forget the ausf H version was already overstressing the chassis.)

Fortunately for us, Revell makes an excellent PnzIV ausf H, which I used as a base model, and I got a cheap(ish) 88 from Hasegawa to stick on top in the well-established German fashion. (I say cheapish, because for ten quid it’s not particularly good. I had to drill out the barrel, for one, and the detail is soft altogether.)

The first cut with a small razor saw… this is the point of no return. Unfortunately I have not made any more photos of the building process. In short, I successfully removed the extra bits (without completely destroying the rest), and glued evergreen cut to size to form the “fighting compartment” of the gun. I waited for months for this part, because I was desperately looking for appropriately sized no-slip surface PE sheets, but found none. I have managed to find one set, of course, right after I finished the model.

With this step, the conversion part was essentially over. (Babysteps. I’m happy with the first major scratchbuild I did. Next: BT-SV.)

From here on, everything was straightforward.

The first fitting of the gun onto the deck of the tank. The gun is still black later it was painted German gray.

I wanted to give some contrast to the model, so I painted the added bits red-oxide color, as if the builders were too lazy to paint the converted parts. Most likely they would have painted over the primer on the metal to protect it, and to decrease the contrast -after all, anti-aircraft vehicles were prime targets for ground attack airplanes. They probably would have repainted the gun itself as well I gave it a gray color, which was the original color used in AA batteries. I wanted to make it look like a conversion: they took a used chassis and a used gun, and mated them together. The gun is slightly elevated, and offset – it looks more dynamic this way. It’s a shame it’s not movable.

The tank received a moderate amount of wear and tear, some dust and rust not too much, but I did want to make it look like a used tank. I added some paint chips around the hatches and edges using dark brown, and some lighter scratches using a lightened base color. A soft lead pencil was used to give a metallic shine to the edges. I added a lot of dust onto the fighting compartment after all, there were at least 4 people manning the gun, and they won’t be wiping their boots before climbing up to their station. The wicker ammo holder was strategically placed onto the mudguard to cover up the holes… Filling them in would have been a major inconvenience, as it would have damaged the no-slip marks, and getting a PE replacement would have been expensive. (And frankly: I was pleased with myself that it was not damaged at the cutting phase I was not about to remove it after all that suffering.) I placed some empty shell casings around the gun to make it look a little bit more “lived in”, and called it a day. Later on I plan to add some more crew equipment (helmets, personal items, etc), but I’ll need to find a good aftermarket set first.

You are not out of the woods yet (and in the opinion of some, you never will be with the German heavy line), because this tank is nowhere as über as World War II films or ACG works would have let you believed. It is however a consistent tank that can be played two ways, depending on whether you equip the medium-range 7.5cm L/48 or the 10.5cm L/28 Howitzer. Like all other tanks with the medium 75mm gun, it engages best at medium to long range in hills where possible, to make up for the below-average DPM. Comparing it to the Panzer 3/4 – with the higher RoF/DPM with the otherwise identical 7,5 cm gun, and the better short range punch with the 10,5cm gun, mean that the PzKpfw IV is better equipped for do-it-yourself firepower focused players. By contrast the PzKpfw III/IV in the Leopard 1 line is more suited for a more mobile spotting and assistance play style.

The Pzkpfw. الرابع Ausf. H is difficult to play stock, since its weak engine and radio will all be hindrance to you. Support other more capable tanks is the best way to survive and earn good credits and experience. The second turret is an improvement from the stock turret in view range and rate of fire. Additionally, the turret gets some thin spaced armor which absorbs most HE hits.

مع ال 7.5cm L/48, you're primarily a flanker or sniper, firing from a medium range and trying to remain out of the fray. In this role, equipping a Camo Net may be a good idea while you stay still and pump out the DPM, as the Pz IV had a very decent camo value for a medium tank. Unlike many German vehicles, the PzKpfw IV has decent gun depression, and can take up hull-down positions, even though your turret armour is inferior to your frontal hull armour value. Your turret presents a very small target, and is difficult to hit at range. Beware that 7.5 cm L/48 can not penetrate more heavily armored tier 6 or tier 7 heavies from front without gold ammo. For above-mentioned reasons, the 10.5cm howitzer is the most used weapon on the PzKpfw IV and owes it popularity partially to its high alpha damage, which reduces exposure time when fighting close quarters when comparing time per damage dealt. With the 10.5cm, you get to play primarily as a brawler, getting close and slugging it out. However, the weak side and turret armor makes this an unfavorable choice if you're not cautious.

Keep in mind that you will often be facing tanks that can kill you in 2-4 shots, so even though the tank can work as a close quarters brawler, its light armor and hit points coupled with the slow gun reloading time must be taken into account when doing so. You should also note that the turret does not have that large a mantlet that could add to its 50 mm frontal armor, so most opponents will get a reliable penetration when they hit your turret front. Consequentially, hull down maneuvers are only useful when you can keep your opponents at long range so that they will miss your comparatively small turret often. Another well known vulnerability is the PzKpfw IV's extremely weak side armor, which is even vulnerable to 105mm or 122mm HE shots, since they can kill or nearly-kill the tank within one penetrating shot. It is worth noting that this tank is just slightly inferior to the M4 Sherman in terms of protection: its side armor and rear armor are inferior and its turret utterly outclassed. However, it has considerably more powerful stock and top gun than the M4 if comparing the 105mm howitzers. The weaker turret and more limited gun depression will hurt at times. Once in top configuration, the Pz IV's camo value, turret traverse speed and radio range are better and its acceleration should be slightly better due to having more higher horsepower/ton.
